DCEC Engineering Competition

DESIGNED BY STUDENTS. DRIVEN BY INNOVATION

ABOUT

The Engineering Competition & Showcase is organized by the student-led Durham College Engineering Club, in collaboration with the Durham College Student Association, and with support from Durham College’s Faculty of Science and Engineering.

The event culminates in a public Engineering Showcase, where student present their projects to peers, faculty, industry partners, and the local community.

The competition concludes with the Engineering Showcase, taking place on March 24–25, 2026.

The showcase is expected to attract 300+ attendees, including:

  • Current Durham College students

  • Graduates and alumni

  • Educators and faculty

  • High school students

  • Industry professionals and community leaders

During the showcase, students present their projects, demonstrate prototypes, and discuss their design processes. The event concludes with the presentation of Durham College Engineering Awards, recognizing outstanding achievement, innovation, and design excellence.

Mission

Our Commitment

Our mission is to empower Durham College students to apply design processes, creativity, and innovation to real-world challenges, while fostering collaboration, professional growth, and community engagement through a student-led competition and public showcase.

The Challenge

Participants are challenged to redesign an existing product, system, or process and improve its performance, efficiency, sustainability, or usability through innovative engineering solutions.

Rather than starting from scratch, students will analyze a real-world design that already exists, identify its limitations, and apply the engineering design process to develop an improved solution. This approach reflects real engineering practice, where innovation often comes from refining and optimizing proven ideas.

Projects may focus on improvements such as:

  • Enhanced performance or reliability

  • Reduced cost, weight, or material usage

  • Increased efficiency or sustainability

  • Improved safety, accessibility, or user experience

  • Simplified manufacturing or maintenance

Participants may work individually or in teams, using research, calculations, CAD modeling, prototyping, simulation, and/or testing to support their design decisions.

The challenge encourages creative thinking, practical problem-solving, and technical justification, with an emphasis on demonstrating measurable improvements over the original design.

WHY DO IT?

The Durham College Engineering Competition gives students the chance to take what is learn in class and actually apply it to a real design challenge. It’s a great opportunity to work as a team, be creative, and build something they would be proud to showcase.

Allows students to strengthen their technical skills, gain project experience, and build a portfolio piece while working on a practical engineering challenge, with cash prizes on the line!
